Sounds like an unlikely pair, right? (like comfortable stilettos). But it is possible, here are 10 restaurants I like going to with my son....and to get a great meal.
10. Megas on the Danforth. Nothing is better than getting a seat on their outdoor patio and not having to worry if you're offending others with the antics of your little ones. With a kid friendly atmosphere read boisterous and loud, (the staff love kids). You'll actually be able to enjoy that tender and succulent Grilled Octopus. Not into seafood? Megas also happens to have the best Chicken Souvlaki on the strip. Large pieces of nicely marinated chicken breast are an explosion of juicyness in your mouth. The pricing is very reasonable too.
9. Ferraro Pizzaria. Come 6pm this quaint midtown restaurant is teaming with young parents and their children. With so many types of thin crust wood-burning-oven pizza to choose from, this will be the most challenging thing you'll encounter.
8. Asian Legend. In the heart of Chinatown, a terrific Chinese restaurant opposite the newly renovated AGO. This restaurant is bustling with so much activity and energy that even if your child decided to have a full-on melt down, none of the neighbouring tables would even hear him. We know this from our own experience just 2 nights ago. Noise, bring it on!
7. Lick's Burgers. Kids get a kick out of the sing-songing of their order and my son just loves the red and white balloons everywhere. But truth be told - they have one of the best burgers in the city and that guk? still trying to figure out what makes it taste so good!
6. Mama Martino's. Not exactly in downtown Toronto, this crazy busy Italian Trattoria is a hit with the kids. You will undoubtedly see yourself in a line out the door if you're not there before 6:45pm, but the various fountains of 'peeing cherubs' and other garden memorabilia will fascinate and entertain your children. Once inside be prepared to get stuffed. All entrés come with side pastas and piled high with mounds of tomato sauce and melted cheese.
5. Brunch at The Rebel House - a Rosedale institution on Sunday mornings The Rebel House serves up a mean Eggs Benny, homemade baked beans and kid approved french toast. Kids will delight with the parachute out back that serves as ceiling/rain shelter in the summer.
4. Katz's Deli & Corned Beef Emporium located at 3300 Dufferin St (by Yorkdale Mall). This open and airy cafeteria style set up ensures a quick meal and allows kids to see what they want to order before eating. They'll enjoy seeing whole slabs of juicy pastrami being put through industrial meat slicers to end up as thinly sliced gloriousness piled high on top of fresh rye.
3. Richtree Market. We like going to the location at 42 Yonge St. - The kids will love 'shopping' from food station to food station selecting their own meals. There is a lot of variety from making your own pizza to delicious waffles & crepes for dessert.
2. Oliver & Bonacini Cafe & Grill. Another bustling restaurant in Bayview Village. You'll be just as satisfied with the O & B Maccaroni and Cheese as will your child. They've loaded this one up with slivered chicken and Balderson's aged cheddar.
1. Pho Hung - 200 Bloor Street West (Bloor St & St. George). We have been going to this place for years even before Mini Munchie was born. They have the most flavourful bowls of pho (these consist of noodles and cilantro in a tasty broth with the addition of shredded pork and beef wrapped in mint leaves). The owners are really good with kids. On our last visit, Mini Munchie got a personal tour of the kitchen. What could be more fun for a child?
